Many Thai Language learners understand that the word “should” in Thai is “ควร /kuan/” and they apply the word ควร /kuan/ in all situations when they need the word “should”. In fact, Thai people say the word “should” differently depending on the context.
[1] ควร /kuan/ means “should” to make suggestion to someone or telling someone has obligation to do something
PATTERN: ควร /kuan/ + verb
คุณควรไปหาหมอ
/kun kuan bpai hăa măw/
You should go to see a doctor.
คุณควรเรียนภาษาไทย
/kun kuan rian paa-săa tai/
You should learn Thai.
Negative Pattern: ไม่ควร / mâi kuan/ + verb
คุณไม่ควรออกจากบ้าน
/kun mâi kuan àwk jàak bâan/
You shouldn’t leave home.
คุณไม่ควรดื่มเยอะเกินไป
/kun mâi kuan dùem yér gern bpai/
You shouldn’t drink too much.
ASKING FOR AGREEMENT/OPINION
When asking someone for an agreement “Should I?”, “Should you?” or “Shall we?”, this pattern is used in spoken Thai;
a sentence + ดีไหม /dii mái/?
เราไปประเทศไทยดีไหม
/rao bpai bprà-têet tai dii mái/
Shall we go to Thailand?
เราเรียนภาษาไทยก่อนดีไหม
/rao rian paa-săa tai gàwn dii mái/
Shall we learn Thai language first?
ผมโทรหาคุณพรุ่งนี้ดีไหม
/ pŏm too-hăa kun prûng-níi dii mái/
Should I call you tomorrow?
