VIDEO: Practice Your Thai While Making Seafood Dipping Sauce

Tuesday June 2, 2020 by Mod 4 Comments

While I was on holiday in Hua Hin over a week ago, I went to a seafood market to get some frsh prawns and cockles. I invited Pear to join the party and we grilled the seafood. Thai people can’t enjoy seafood with out น้ำจิ้มซีฟู้ด /náam jîm seafood/ Thai Spcicy Seafood Dipping Sauce!

We thought you might enjoy watching this cooking video and practice your Thai at the same time.

Script from the video:

พริกขี้หนู /prík kîi nŭu/

Bird’s Eye Chilli

Red chilies give nice color

/prík kîi nŭu daeng tam hâi sĭi sŭai/

/prík kîi nŭu sĭi kĭao jà tam hâi pèt/

The green chilies give spiciness.

/láew-gâw mii grà-tiam/

Then we have garlics.

/láew-gâw rao gâw bprung rót dûai/

And we season the sauce with…

/dtàe-wâa rao gâw ao náam-dtaan maa lá-laai hâi bpen náam-chûeam/

But we dissolved sugar into sugar syrup.

/Kru Pear, rao rêerm tam gan leoi dii gwàa/

Pear, We shall start making it now.

/rao gâw jà sài prík ná ká/

We are going to add chilies

/sài mòt leoi/

We will add all of it.

/pró wâa rao jà tam yér/

Because we will make plenty.

/tâa mâi châwp pèt gâw sài náwi náwi/

If you don’t like it spicy, then add just a small amount.

/dtàe rao châwp pèt pèt/

But we like it spicy.

/rao sài săwng sĭ táng kĭao láew-gâw daeng/

We add two colours, both green and red.

/sài long bpai leoi/

Add it in there.

/láew-gâw dtam/

Then we pound.

/grà-tiam/

Garlic

/rao dterm náam-bplaa leoi mái à?/

Do we add fish sauce now?

/dtaw-níi rao gâw jà bprung rót ná ká/

Now we are going to season.

/náam bplaa hòk cháwn dtó/

6 table spoons of fish sauce.

/náam-dtaan ná ká, rao tam bpen náam-chûeam láew, gâw hòk mŭean-gan/

Sugar, we dissolved it into sugar syrup already. Also six.

/náam-laai lăi/

My mouth is watering.

/à-ròi nâw-nawn/

It will be definitely tasty.

/náam má-naao kâ/

Lime juice

/rîab-ráwi láew kâ/

It is done.

/tay leoi dii mái ká?/

Shall we pour it?

/kruu Pear chûai kìa nòi kâ/

Can you please remove it?

/ hăwm mâak leoi/

It smells so good!

/rîab-ráwi láew kâ, náam jîm aa-hăan tá-lay/

It is ready, seafood dipping sauce.

/jà bpai gin gàp hŏi/

We will eat it with cockles.

/chim nòi ná ká/

Let me taste it.

/pèt dtàe sâeb bàk-kák/

Spicy but it is so tasty!

/ dĭao rao jà ao náam-jîm seafood kăwng rao bpai gin  gàp gûng yàang kâ/

We will bring our seafood dipping sauce to eat grilled prawns.

/rao jà lûak hŏy kraeng kâ/

We will lightly boil the cockles.

Nice video, it makes me home sick. I live in Samui 3-5 months every year, but because of Corvid-19 I’m stuck in Australia. 😭😭
