VIDEO: Learn Thai from Love Phrases

Saturday February 8, 2020 by Mod 21 Comments

With Valentine’s day this month, love is definitely in the air, so this lesson you will get to learn Thai language from love quotes. I selected six lovely English phrases and explain how we construct those sentences in Thai.

I would like to encourage you to try to translate these expressions to Thai language yourself first, then you can listen to my explanation and check how your translations are different from mine.

Here are the six love quotes;

  1. I’m still crushing on you since the moment we met.
  2. Life is better when we’re going through it together.
  3. “ Where there is love, there is life.” —Gandhi
  4. “ Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” —Lao Tzu
  5. “ If I had a flower for every time I thought of you … I could walk through my garden forever.” —Alfred Tennyson
  6. I followed my heart and it led me to the fridge.
  7. I just called to say I love you.

My translation is below:

  1. I’m still crushing on you since the moment we met.

ผมยังแอบปลื้มคุณอยู่ตั้งแต่นาทีที่เราเจอกัน

/pŏm yang àeb bplûem kun yùu dtâng-dtàe naa-tii tîi rao jer gan/

or

ผมยังแอบปิ๊งคุณอยู่ตั้งแต่วินาทีที่เราเจอกัน

pŏm yang àeb bpíng kun yùu  dtâng-dtàe naa-tii tîi rao jer

  1. Life is better when we’re going through it together.

ชีวิตมันดีขึ้น เวลา เราได้ผ่านมันไปด้วยกัน

/chii-wít man dii kûen way-laa rao pàan man bpai dûai-gan/

  1. Where there is love, there is life.” —Gandhi

ที่ไหนมีความรัก ที่นั่นมีชีวิต

/tîi-năi mii kwaam rák tîi-nân mii chii-wít/

  1. Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” —Lao Tzu

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength,

การถูกใครสักคนรักอย่างลึกซึ้ง ทำให้คุณมีพลัง  แต่การรักใครสักคนทำให้คุณมีความกล้าหาญ

/gaan tùuk krai sàk kon rák yàang lúek-súeng tam hâi kun mii pá-lang/

while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

แต่การ รักใครสักคนทำให้ คุณมีความกล้าหาญ

/dtàe gaan rák krai sàk kon tam hâi kun mii kwaam glâa-hăan/

  1. “ If I had a flower for every time I thought of you … I could walk through my garden forever.” —Alfred Tennyson

If I had a flower for every time I thought of you

ถ้าผมได้ดอกไม้ ทุกครั้งที่ผมคิดถึงคุณ

/tâa pŏm dâai dàwk-máai túk kráng tîi pŏm kít- tŭeng kun/

I could walk through my garden forever.

ผมคงจะเดินในสวนดอกไม้ตลอดไป

/pŏm kong jà dern nai sŭan dàwk-máai dtà-làwd-bpai/

6. I followed my heart and it led me to the fridge.

ผมตามหัวใจของผม แล้วหัวใจก็พาผมมาที่ตู้เย็น

/pŏm dtaam hŭa-jai kăwng pŏm, láew hŭa-jai gâw paa pŏm maa tîi dtûu-yen/

7. I just called to say I love you.

ฉันแค่โทรมาเพื่อบอกว่ารักคุณ

/chán kâe too maa pûea bàwk wâa chán rák kun/

How did it go? I hope you learned new Thai vocabulary and sentence structure from this lesson. If you are interested to learn more Thai love expressions that is corny yet sweet, we you might enjoy the lessons below. You will learn expressions such as

อยากเกิดเป็นขนจมูกของเธอ จะได้อยู่กับเธอทุกลมหายใจ

/yàak gèrd bpen kŏn jà-mùuk kăwng ter, jà dâai yùu gàp ter túk lom-hăai-jai/

I wish I was born to be your nasal hair, so I could be with you every time you breath.

or

วาเลนไทน์มีแค่วันเดียว แต่รักเธอคนเดียวมีทุกวัน

/waa-len-taai mii kâe wan-diao, dtâe rák ter kon diao mii túk-wan/

      Agreed!
It’s really cool when she answers our comments, but we should keep in mind that she’s got a small kid that probably takes her lots of time so she can’t read or answer all of her fans that comment on her site and FB.

You don’t celebrate it, Mod? Wow. But honestly, don’t you feel good if you get a flower from your partner on that day?

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the video.

I think I am leaning towards the more practical side of life. I am not totally unromantic though. I add a drop of romance to life’s mix every now and again. 🙂

I personally don’t celebrate valentine’s day. I just think we don’t need one specific day to express our love. 🙂
