In the occasion of Halloween, let’s learn something related to ghosts.
First, the correct pronunciation of the word “ghost” is ผี /pǐi/. Many students are often confused with the word พี่ /pîi/ which is used to call an older person.
Let me give you some sentence examples;
คุณกลัวผีมั้ย /kun glua pǐi mái?/ = Are you afraid of ghost?
คุณชอบดูหนังผีมั้ย /kun châwp duu năng pǐi mái?/ = Do you like watching horror movies?
There is a Thai saying “ผีหลอกไม่น่ากลัวเท่าคนหลอก /pǐi làwk mâi nâa-glua tâo kon làwk/”
หลอก /làwk/ has two meanings;
If it is used to talk about ghost, it means “to haunt”
If it is used to talk about people, it means “to fool, to deceive”
This phrase literally translates “ghost haunts is not as scary as people fool”.
Useful Vocabulary
กลัว /glua/ = to be afraid of something, fear of something, to be scared
หนังผี /năng pǐi/ = horror movie

We don’t say คนหลอก , the phrase คนโกหก is good. We also say “คนหลอกลวง”.
