Sawatdee ka,
Last Sunday I walked around my neighborhood on Chareon Krung road looking for something new to eat. I found a Thai-Muslim restaurant on the corner of Chareon Krung and Silom road. This restaurant is founded by a well-known Bang Rak market goat butcher.
One of my favourite Muslim dishes is ‘goat biryani’ (ข้าวหมกแพะ), and I also tried their ‘Beef Panang’ (แกงแพนงเนื้อ) and ‘chicken liver Masala’.
The most interesting dish I ever heard of and never tried before was “Beef Brain Curry” (แกงสมองวัว). I saw it on a tray on the display and I thought it was minced chicken curry, but they told me it was beef brain. I thought “Oh! really? I am not sure I want to try that”, but my inner spirit was screaming for excitement so I asked the waiter to give me a very tiny portion to try out.
What happened to me was funny. I felt like I was in the Fear Factor show. Before I ate it I felt really really nervous, and my hands were shaking seriously! It looked like minced chicken and tasted like beef fat with curry. I could only eat one teaspoon despite the mild and flavoursome taste. I guess it was purely psychological since I knew I was eating brains.
If you would like to have delicious chicken or goat Biryani, or would like to experience fear-factor food; The Beef Brain. This place is recommended!

It is very interesting to me what different cultures and different generations find “weird” foodwise. My dad told me a common breakfast when he was young was eggs and brains, which I have never tried and find the idea a little disturbing. In Louisiana frog lets are common but many Americans find that weird, and gross. Many Americans have never tried snails which I love, but admit was a little scary the first time I tried them. So some seemingly weird foods are just a couple bites away from becoming a favorite food.
Coincidentally, just yesterday I was talking about food with a friend that grew up on a farm in Texas and often ate mountain oysters (bull testicales) a common dish in parts of America but I don’t know if I could bring myself to eat that part of an animal. Those are cut off when the animal is still alive! The poor guy! Other than that I like to try interesting foods.
