You need to know the basics before you can build a beautiful castle with your words.
In this lesson, you will learn three fundamental rules of forming basic Thai sentences that are useful in everyday life.
[1] Sentences with Nouns
Positive form: subject + เป็น /bpen/ + noun
ผมเป็นคนอังกฤษ
/pŏm bpen kon ang-grìt/
I am English. (*คนอังกฤษ /kon ang-grìt/ literally translates ‘English person’)
ผมเป็นหมอ
/pŏm bpen măw/
I am a doctor.
เขาเป็นเพื่อนผม
/káo bpen pûean pŏm/
He/she is my friend.
Negative form: subject + ไม่ใช่ /mâi châi/ + noun
ผมไม่ใช่คนไทย
/pŏm mâi-châi kon tai/
I am not Thai. (male speaker)
ฉันไม่ใช่คนไทย
/chán mâi-châi kon tai/
I am not Thai. (Female speaker)
ผมไม่ใช่ครู
/pŏm mâi-châi kruu/
I am not a teacher.
เขาไม่ใช่แฟนผม
/káo mâi-châi faen pŏm/
She is not my girlfriend.
[2] Sentences with Adjectives
Positive form: Subject + adjective
อาหารอร่อย
/aa-hăan à-ròi/
Food is tasty.
ภาษาไทยง่าย
/paa-săa tai ngâai/
Thai Language is easy.
เขาสวย
/káo sŭai/
She is beautiful.
Negative form: Subject + + mâi + adjective
อาหารไม่อร่อย
/aa-hăan mâi à-ròi/
Food is not tasty.
ภาษาไทยไม่ง่าย
/paa-săa tai mâi ngâai/
Thai Language is not easy.
เขาสวย
/káo mâi sŭai/
She is not beautiful.
[3] Sentences describe where someone or something is
Positive form: subject + อยู่ /yùu/ + preposition + location
ผมอยู่ที่บ้าน
/pŏm yùu tîi bâan/
I am at home.
เขาอยู่ที่กรุงเทพ
/káo yùu tîi grung-têep/
He is in Bangkok.
พิซซ่าอยู่ในตู้เย็น
/pít-sâa yùu nai dtûu-yen/
Pizza is in the fridge.
Negative form: subject + ไม่อยู่ /mâi yùu/ + preposition + location
ผมไม่อยู่ที่บ้าน
/pŏm mâi yùu tîi bâan/
I am not at home.
แม่ไม่อยู่ในห้องน้ำ
/mâe mâi yùu nai hâwng-náam/
Mom is not in the bathroom.
