What Are Conjunctions?

Conjunctions are short, teeny-tiny words. You might not even notice these tiny words in a sentence. But they’re everywhere. And they’re important. Because conjunctions can help you connect ideas and build sentences like a native speaker

Common conjunctions that we use in everyday life are: and, but, or, because, therefore, if, until, before – after.

In this lesson I want to talk first about the basic conjunction “and”. It seems like a simple word, but there are a few words in Thai that means “and” so some Thai language learners may be confused.

Three words in Thai for “and”

1. กับ /gàp/
2. แล้วก็ /láew-gâw/
3. และ /láe/

What is the difference?

[1] กับ /gàp/ is used to connect TWO WORDS.

Example:

Aiden can speak Thai and English.

เอเดนพูดภาษาไทยกับภาษาอังกฤษได้

/Aiden pûut paa-săa ang-grìt gàp paa-săa tai dâai/

We are going on holiday in Phuket and Pang Nga.

เราจะไปเที่ยวภูเก็ตกับพังงา

/rao jà bpai tîao puu-gèt gàp pang-ngaa/

เต่ากับหอยทากใครคลานเร็วกว่ากัน

/dtào gàp hŏi tâak, krai klaan reo gwàa gan/Turtle and snail who moves faster?

Both A and B

Pattern: ทั้ง A กับ B /táng A gàp B/

Example:

Both my husband and I are vegetarian.

ทั้งสามีกับฉันเป็นมังสวิรัต

/ táng săa-mii gàp chán bpen mang-sà-wí-rát/

Both Tom and Bob are learning Thai with teacher Mod.

ทั้งทอมกับบ๊อบกำลังเรียนภาษาไทยกับครูมดอยู่

/ táng Tom gàp Bob gam-lang rian paa-săa tai gàp Kru Mod yùu/

Jane is going out with both Bob and Tom at the same time?

เจนคบกับทั้งบ๊อบกับทอมพร้อมกันเลยเหรอ

/Jane kóp gàp tang Bob gàp Tom práwm gan leoi rĕr?/

[2] แล้วก็ is used to connect two phrases or clauses.

Example

Ann likes to watch movies on Netflix and cook vegetarian food on weekends.

แอนชอบดูหนังใน Netflix แล้วก็ ทำอาหารมังสวิรัติวันเสาร์อาทิตย์

/Ann châwp duu năng nai Netflix, láew-gâw tam aa-hăan mang-sà-wí-rát wan săo aa-tít/

Aiden can speak both Thai and English because his dad is English and his mom is Thai.

เอเดนพูดทั้งภาษาไทยกับภาษาอังกฤษได้เพราะว่าพ่อของเขาเป็นคนอังกฤษแล้วก็แม่เป็นคนไทย

/Aiden pûut táng paa-săa tai gàp paa-săa ang-grìt dâai, pró wâa pâw kăwng káo bpen kon ang-grìt láew-gâw mâe kăwng káo bpen kon tai/

ฉันพยายามไม่กินอาหารขยะ มันไม่มีประโยชน์แล้วก็ทำให้ฉันอ้วน

Chán pá-yaa-yaam mâi gin aa-hăan kà-yà, man mâi mii bprà-yòot láew-gâw tam-hâi chán ûan

[3] และ  /láe/

และ /láe/ means “and” , this word can used to connect both words and phrases but it is FORMAL and only used in writing. You will not hear Thai people use และ/láe/ in everyday life.

Second meaning of กับ /gáp/ and แล้วก็ /láew-gâw/

กับ /gàp/ also means “with”

Example:

Do you want to go with me and John?

คุณอยากไปกับผมแล้วก็จอห์นไหม

/kun yàak bpai gàp pŏm láew-gâw John mái?/

แล้วก็ also means “and then”

Example:

We will go to eat and then will go shopping.

เราจะไปกินข้าวแล้วก็จะไปซื้อของ

/rao jà bpai gin kâao, láew-gâw bpai súe kăwng

A Tip you don’t find in a textbook:

When using แล้วก็ /láew-gâw/ for the meaning “and then” sometimes native Thai speakers will separate the word แล้ว /láew/ and ก็/gâw/ with the subject of the sentence in the second clause.

Listen to this:

พวกเขาแต่งงานกันเดือนที่แล้ว แล้วพวกเขาก็ท้องทันที

/pûak-káo dtàeng-ngaan gan duean tîi láew, láew pûak-káo gâw táwng tan-tii/

They got married last month then they got pregnant immediately.

เขาทำงานเสร็จ แล้วเขาก็ไปกินข้าวเย็นกับเพื่อน

/káo tam-ngaan sèt, láew káo gâw bpai gin kâao-yen gàp pûean/

He finished work, he then went to eat dinner with his friends.

Keren บอกเลิก Ann  แล้วเขาก็ไปคบกับ  Jane ทันที

/Keren lêrk gàp Ann, láew káo gâw bpai kóp gàp Jane tan-tii/

Keren broke up with Ann, and then went to date Jane immediately.
