VIDEO: 10 Phrases to Sound Like a Thai IMMEDIATELY!

You already speak some Thai and want to impress the native speakers with your knowledge? We have created this list of everyday words and expressions that will finally help you achieve native-level fluency in your conversational Thai.

  1. ประมาณนี้ /bprà-maan níi/ – “Something like this” 

 

Example:

อยากได้ชุดประมาณนี้

/yàak dâai chút bprà-maan níi/

I would like a dress similar to this.

 

อยากได้โทรศัพท์เครื่องละ 8000-9000 ประมาณนี้

/yàak dâai too-rá-sàp krûeang lá 8000-9000 bprà-maan níi/

I would like a phone that cost about 8000-9000 Baht.

 

2. ไหนว่า / năi wâa/ – “I thought you said…” 

 

Example:

ไหนว่าไม่มา

/ năi wâa mâi maa/

I thought you said you were not coming.

 

ไหนว่าไม่สบาย

/ năi wâa mâi sà-baai/

I thought you said you were unwell.

 

3. ถึงว่า /tŭeng wâa/ – “no wonder, that’s why”

 

Examples:

อาหารไทยอร่อยมาก ถึงว่าทุกคนชอบกินอาหารไทย

/aa-hăai tai à-ròi mâak, tŭeng wâa túk kon châwp aa-hăai tai/

Thai food is very tasty, no wonder everyone loves eating Thai food.

 

ภูเก็ตสวยมาก ถึงว่ามีนักท่องเที่ยวเยอะ

/puu-gèt sŭai mâak, tŭeng wâa nák tâwng-tîao yér/

Phuket is nice, that’s why there are many tourists.

4. ว่าแล้ว /wâa láew/ – No surprise! I knew it!

 

Examples:

ว่าแล้ว เพราะว่าเขาดูสวยขึ้น

/wâa láew! Pró wâa káo duu sŭai kûen/

I knew it! Because she looks prettier. 

 

ว่าแล้วต้องเบี้ยวนัด

/wâa láew dtâwng bîao nát/
I knew it that you would stand me up

 

5. ใช่เหรอ /châi lăw/ – “Are you sure?”

 

A: รถเบนซ์ถูกมาก

/rót bén tùuk mâak/

Mercedes Benz cars are cheap.

 

B: ใช่เหรอ

/châi lăw/

Are you sure?

 

A: ภาษาไทยยากมาก 

/paa-săa tai yâak mâak/

Thai language is hard.

B: ใช่เหรอ

/châi lăw/

Are you sure?

6. เออเนอะ /er nér/ – “that’s right, you are right”

 

Examples:

A:ฉันอยากซื้อรถเบนซ์

/chán yàak súe rót bén/

I want to buy a Mercedes Benz.

 

B: แต่เราไม่มีเงินนะ

/dtàe rao mâi mii ngern ná/

But we don’t have money.

 

A:เออเนอะ 

/er nér/

You are right.

 

A: ฉันอยากจองโต๊ะวาเลนไทน์

/chán yàak jawng dtó waa-len-taai/

I want to book a table for Valentine’s

 

B: แต่แกไม่มีแฟนนะ

/dtàe gae mâi mii faen ná/

But you don’t have a boyfriend. 

 

A: เออเนอะ 

/er nér/

You are right.

 

7. นึกออกป่ะ /núek àwk bpá/

“Can you imagine that?” 

“Do you know how I feel?”

“Can you recall?”

 

Examples:

ฉันอยากไปร้านอาหารเล็ก ๆแถวทองหล่อ 

/chán yàak bpai ráan aa-hăan lék lék tăew tawng-làw/

I want to go to the small restaurant in Thonglor (where we’ve been before).

นึกออกป่ะ 

/núek àwk bpá/

Can you recall where it is?

 

ฉันทำงานทุกวัน เหนื่อยมาก

/chán tam-ngaan túk wan, nùeai mâak/

I work everyday, I am really tired. 

แกนึกออกป่ะ

/núek àwk bpá/

Do you know how I feel?

 

8. รู้งี้ /rúu ngîi/ – “If I had known this”

 

ภาษาไทยง่ายมาก รู้งี้เรียนนานแล้ว

paa-săa tai ngâai mâak, rúu ngîi rian naan láew/

Thai language is easy. If I had known this, I would have learned it long ago.

 

รู้งี้ไม่มาร้านนี้ 

/ rúu ngîi mâi maa ráan níi/

If I had known this, I would have not come here.

 

9. เอาอย่างงี้ /ao yàang ngíi/

“This is what we’re going to do”

“Let’s do this”

 

เอาอย่างงี้ ฉันจะไปรับคุณ

/ ao yàang ngíi, chán jà bpai ráp kun/

Let’s do this, I’ll pick you up.

 

เอาอย่างงี้ เราเจอกันที่สนามบินตอน 10 โมง

/ ao yàang ngíi, rao jer gan tîi sà-năam bin dtawn 10 moong/

 

10. เดี๋ยวก็ /dĭao gâw/ – “soon, it will be…”

 

อย่ากินเหล้าเยอะ เดี๋ยวก็เมา

/yàa gin lâo yér, dĭao gâw mao/

Don’t drink so much, you will be drunk soon.

 

เดี๋ยวก็หาย

/ dĭao gâw hăai/

You will recover soon.
