VIDEO: STOP Saying These 10 Thai Words! Try these BETTER Ways

Wednesday February 10, 2021 by Mod 27 Comments

Over the past 10 years a Thai language teacher, we have noticed that our students, especially beginners often misuse a few Thai words in daily life. Today we put together a list of those 10 commonly misused words for you and suggest BETTER ways to say them.

  1. Use ก็ดี /gâw dii/ instead of สบายๆ /sà-baai sà-baai/
  2. Use เฉยๆ / chĕoi-chĕoi/ instead of 50-50
  3. Use ไม่ค่อย /mâi kâwi/ instead of นิดหน่อย /nít nòi/
  4. Use ประมาณ /bprà-maan/ instead of อาจจะ /àat-jà/
  5. Use เคย /keoi/ instead of แล้ว /láew/
  6. Use หลาย /lăai/ instead of เยอะ /yér/
  7. แล้วก็ /láew-gâw/ instead of กับ /gàp/ or และ /láe/
  8. ก็เลย /gâw leoi/ – remember to put this word AFTER the subject in the second clause
  • ผมอยากเกษียณที่ประเทศไทย ผมก็เลยทำงานหนัก

/ pŏm yàak gà-sĭan tîi bprà teed tai, pŏm gâw leoi tam-ngaan nàk/

I want to retire in Thailand, that’s why I work hard.

  • ผมอยากพูดภาษาไทยกับคุณ ผมก็เลยเรียนภาษาไทย

/ pŏm yàak pûud paa-săa tai gàp kun, pŏm gâw-leoi rian paa-săa tai/

I want to speak Thai with you, that’s why I am studying Thai.

  1. Use เหรอ / rĕr/ instead of ไหม /mái/
  2. Use เจอกัน /jer gan/ instead of ลาก่อน /laa gàwn/

    Hope you are enjoying Samui?
I first came here over 40 years ago!
I now live here all the time and love it. Would not want to live anywhere else in the world.
Enjoy your lessons and posts, when you get to go on the beach and swim, beware, some days there are small jellyfish. One bite does not hurt! But several can be painful!

I am enjoying Samui life very much. It is so peaceful at the moment. Thank you for the warning. I hope I will not get stung by a jellyfish. 🙂

      Sawatdee ka Khun Gary,

Thank you for your message. I am in Samui but I am actually not on vacation. I work everyday as usual so I haven’t had a chance to take my swimsuit to the beach yet. Hopefully soon I can have a break and share some pictures. 🙂

I will ask again here, maybe you will answer this time. 😉

I heard some stereotypes about thai people, some I read online and some I was told by my friend who visited Thailand few years ago. Now I’m curious what’s your personal opinion on this since you are real Thai.

The stereotypes I want to ask you about are:

1.) Thais are always late. – Are you late too?

2.) Pad Thai is a tourist food, real thais don’t eat it often. – do you eat it often?

3.) Thai girls don’t shave their intimate parts. – do you shave/wax it?

4.) BKK has a really bad pollution all time of the year and people wear mask because of it. – do you usually wear mask outside (before covid time)

Looking forward to read your opinion on this!

1.) Thais are always late. – Are you late too?
I am always on time with work. I might be a little late – 15 minutes maximum if it is an appointment with my friends.

2.) Pad Thai is a tourist food, real thais don’t eat it often. – do you eat it often?
I like Pad Thai, but a good Pad Thai is not easy to find so I don’t eat it often.

3.) Thai girls don’t shave their intimate parts. – do you shave/wax it?
      I do, sometimes.

4.) BKK has a really bad pollution all time of the year and people wear mask because of it. – do you usually wear mask outside (before covid time)
I wear a mask during the pollution season.

    Mod & Pear,

OK. Time to get picky as a teacher of English!

In the description, you said, “Over the past 10 years a Thai language teacher, we…”

Better to say, “Over the past 10 years as Thai language teachers, we…”

Seriously, though, your videos and lessons are great. I only have difficulty absorbing all the good information. Thanks for your efforts in educating those of us who are fairly incompetent in speaking reasonable and real Thai.

    Tony
