What Are Conjunctions?

Conjunctions are short, teeny-tiny words. You might not even notice these tiny words in a sentence. But they’re everywhere. And they’re important. Because conjunctions can help you connect ideas and build sentences like a native speaker

Common conjunctions that we use in everyday life are: and, but, or, therefore, because, if, until, before, after etc. In this lesson you will learn to connect clauses with the basic conjunction “although”.

The word “although” in Thai is ถึง / tŭeng/ 

The pattern for connecting phrases with “although” in Thai is below:

ถึง / tŭeng/ + subject + จะ/jà/* + verb/adj. , แต่ /dtàe/* subject + ก็ /gâw/ + verb/adj.

*Note: จะ/jà/ means “will” and แต่ /dtàe/ means “but”. However in this pattern these two words are used as a connector to join clauses together. จะ/jà/ doesn’t use to form the future tense like usual. 

The word จะ/jà/ and แต่ /dtàe/ are also optional. 

Example:

Although I have to work late, I still have to get up early.

ถึงผมจะทำงานดึก ผมก็ต้องตื่นเช้า

/tŭeng pŏm jà tam-ngaan dùek, pŏm gâw dtâwng dtùen cháao/

Although we are far away, we still love each other.

ถึงเราจะอยู่ไกลกัน แต่เราก็รักกัน

/tŭeng rao jà yùu glai gan, dtàe rao gâw rák gan/

Although we have different opinions, we don’t fight.

ถึงเรามีความคิดเห็นต่างกัน เราก็ไม่ทะเลาะกัน

tŭeng rao mii kwaam kít hĕn dtàang gan, rao gâw mâi tá-ló gan

ถึง / tŭeng/ also means

1. Until
2. Arrive

Example:

Have you arrived home yet?

ถึงบ้านรึยัง

/ tŭeng bâan rúe yang?/

เมื่อคืนผมทำงานถึงตี 1

/mûea-kuen pŏm tam-ngaan tŭeng dtii nùeng/

Last night I worked until 1 A.M.

Although last night I worked until 1 A.M., I had to wake up early

ถึงเมื่อคืนผมทำงานถึงตี 1 ผมก็ต้องตื่นเช้า

/tŭeng  mûea-kuen pŏm tam-ngaan tŭeng dtii nùeng, pŏm gâw dtâwng dtùen cháao/
