VIDEO: Pronounce 50 Common Thai Words PERFECTLY

Friday November 15, 2019 by Mod 13 Comments

In my opinion the absolute best way to sound more like a native speaker is to imitate other native speakers. So I want you to imitate or to copy me!

Now these words might seem quite easy to you because they are words we use all the time BUT I would like you to really concentrate on the vowel sounds if the word is pronounced with a short or long sound as well as the tones.

Here is the list of the words you can pronounce PERFECTLY:

1. I = ผม /pŏm/

2. want to = อยาก  /yàak/

3. Go = ไป  /bpai/

4. Verb to be + noun = เป็น /bpen/

5. But = แต่ /dtàe/

6. Know = รู้จัก /rúu jàk/

*Note: รู้จัก /rúu jàk/ means know someone or something. The pattern is รู้จัก /rúu jàk/ is followed by a NOUN.

รู้ /rúu/ means know details or information. The pattern is รู้ /rúu/ is followed by ว่า/wâa/ (that) and a sentence.

For example;

I know Tim. = ผมรู้จักทิม /pŏm rúu jàk Tim/

I know that Tim likes to eat mangoes.  = ผมรู้ว่าทิมชอบกินมะม่วง //pŏm rúu wâa Tim châwp gin má-mûang/

7. Buy = ซื้อ  /súe/

8. Mobile Phone = มือถือ  /mue tŭe/

9. Book = หนังสือ /năng sŭe/

10. Wake up = ตื่น /dtùen/

11. Speak = พูด /pûut/

12. Talk = คุย /kui/

13. Tell = บอก /bàwk/

14. Listen = ฟัง /fang/

15. Hear = ได้ยิน /dâai-yin/

16. Question word use to confirm assumption = เหรอ /rĕr/ (written version) but when Thai people pronounce this word it sounds like  หลอ /lăw/

17. Or = หรือ /rŭe/

18. Walk = เดิน /dern/

19. One = หนึ่ง /nùeng/

20. Half = ครึ่ง /krûeng/

21. Feel = รู้สึก /rúu-sùek/

22. Need to poop = ปวดอึ /bpùat ùe/

23. Just = เพิ่ง /pêrng/

24. Salt = เกลือ /gluea/

25. Bored  = เบื่อ / bùea/

26. Meat = เนื้อ /núea/

27. Tired = เหนื่อย /nùeai/

28. Same = เหมือน/mŭean/

29. Remain  = เหลือ /lŭea/

30. Machine  = เครื่อง /krûeang/

-Airplane = เครื่องบิน /krûeang-bin/

– Beverage = เครื่องดื่ม /krûeang-dùem/

31. Friend  = เพื่อน /pûean/

32. Need to = ต้อง /dtâwng/

33. Table = โต๊ะ  /dtó/

34. Six = หก /hòk/

35. Raining = ฝนตก  /fŏn dtòk/

Of course you are absolutely correct that imitation is the best way to learn a new language and to speak like a normal person would, not like a formal school book. But one concern I have is that when I try to imitate the tonal sounds by listening to you, I might end up sounding more like a Thai woman instead of a Thai man. Do Thai men sound similar to Thai women or do they talk lower, or with less intonation? Maybe I’m silly for worrying about this. 🙂

Thai men also speak with the same intonation as Thai women as it is the nature of Thai language. I have been teaching private Thai lessons for almost 10 years and 98% pf my students are men, they are speaking like a man. 🙂

Kru Mod! Sorry for being off topic again but I want to ask you this. Have tried bikini waxing in any beauty spa/salon in Bangkok? and if so, did it hurt? I’m worried about pain. ^_^ Can you recommend any salon from your personal experience ? I’ve never done it in Asia.
    Thanks again!
